Without a word, Sarah began to unfasten the pearls at her throat\u2014the ones Elias had given her as a wedding gift. She dropped them onto the stone floor, the sound of their impact echoing like a gavel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The vow is broken, Elias,” she said, her voice finally steady. “But not by me.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
