Gasps erupt in the darkness. Glass shatters somewhere near the bar. A woman screams. The only sound left is the slow ticking of the grandfather clock at the center of the hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then\u2014emergency lights flash on in deep crimson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena\u2019s elegant smile is gone. Her face has drained of color. Her trembling hands grip the wheelchair armrests so tightly her knuckles turn white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The little girl still holds her wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou remember now,\u201d the child whispers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the room, Elena\u2019s husband suddenly lunges toward them. \u201cGet her away from Elena!\u201d he shouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before anyone moves, the ballroom doors slam shut by themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guests panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the businessmen reaches for his phone\u2014no signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another backs away slowly, staring at the girl like he\u2019s seen a ghost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because he has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The child tilts her head slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeven years ago,\u201d she says softly, \u201cyou locked the doors exactly like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena stops breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fragments of memory crash into her mind\u2014smoke filling a smaller room\u2026 alarms ignored\u2026 terrified pounding on locked exits\u2026 and one tiny girl crying for her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo\u2026\u201d Elena whispers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The girl finally smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it isn\u2019t a child\u2019s smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou told everyone the fire was an accident.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grandfather clock suddenly stops ticking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then a hidden projector flickers alive above the ballroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Security footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The room watches in horror as Elena appears on screen\u2014standing, not paralyzed\u2014arguing with men beside a locked emergency exit while flames spread behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guests recoil from her wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her husband stares at her in disbelief. \u201cYou said you couldn\u2019t walk\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elena\u2019s lips tremble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The little girl leans close to her ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey buried my mother downstairs,\u201d she whispers. \u201cBut they never buried me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the child slowly points toward the dark hallway behind the ballroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
