Rain from the previous night still clung to the streets of downtown Chicago. Cars crawled bumper to bumper beneath the blazing summer sun while crowds moved restlessly along the sidewalks. Horns echoed between tall buildings. Steam rose from the pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody noticed the crying baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sound was faint beneath the chaos of the city. Weak. Panicked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man crossing the street stopped mid-step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel Carter turned his head slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharp this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes scanned the rows of parked cars lining the curb until he saw movement inside a silver SUV. The windows were completely shut. Sunlight reflected violently off the glass, but through the windshield he could barely make out a tiny child strapped into a car seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The baby\u2019s face was red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its tiny fists beat weakly against the straps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel\u2019s stomach dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh my God\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People nearby finally started noticing too. Some slowed down. Others pulled out their phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But nobody moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel rushed toward the vehicle and yanked the driver\u2019s door handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He slammed his palm against the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey! Is anybody here?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside, the infant let out another broken cry before coughing weakly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweat soaked through the baby\u2019s clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel looked around wildly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCall 911!\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A woman on the sidewalk hesitated before fumbling for her phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel pressed his face against the glass. The heat radiating from inside the SUV was unbearable even from outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The baby\u2019s eyes were beginning to droop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, no, no\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He grabbed the door handle again uselessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His breathing quickened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without another second of hesitation, Daniel ran toward a nearby construction barrier and seized a large chunk of broken concrete from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone yelled, \u201cWait!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CRASH!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stone exploded through the passenger window. Glass rained across the seats and pavement. Gasps erupted from the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel reached inside immediately, ignoring the shards slicing into his arm. He unlocked the door and pulled it open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wave of suffocating heat blasted outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The baby was barely moving now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHey, hey, I got you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel carefully unbuckled the child and lifted the sweating infant into his arms. The baby immediately clung weakly to his shirt, sobbing against his chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d Daniel whispered shakily. \u201cYou\u2019re okay now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stepped away from the SUV, rocking the child gently while people gathered around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One older man muttered angrily, \u201cHow could someone leave a baby in there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another woman filmed everything on her phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel barely noticed any of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The infant\u2019s tiny hand curled around his finger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou smashed my window?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel stared at her in disbelief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour baby was trapped inside!\u201d he snapped. \u201cThe car was like an oven!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman reached for the infant immediately, but Daniel instinctively stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe could\u2019ve died!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was gone for one minute!\u201d the woman yelled defensively. \u201cOne minute!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crowd began murmuring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man nearby shouted, \u201cHe saved your kid!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the woman\u2019s eyes filled with anger instead of gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou had no right to destroy my car!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daniel looked at her like she was insane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Screaming tires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A violent crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stumbled backward, gripping his forehead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
