Weak. Panicked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man crossing the street stopped mid-step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel Carter turned his head slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharp this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Desperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His eyes scanned the rows of parked cars lining the curb until he saw movement inside a silver SUV. The windows were completely shut. Sunlight reflected violently off the glass, but through the windshield he could barely make out a tiny child strapped into a car seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The baby\u2019s face was red.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its tiny fists beat weakly against the straps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel\u2019s stomach dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh my God\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People nearby finally started noticing too. Some slowed down. Others pulled out their phones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But nobody moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel rushed toward the vehicle and yanked the driver\u2019s door handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He slammed his palm against the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHey! Is anybody here?!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside, the infant let out another broken cry before coughing weakly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweat soaked through the baby\u2019s clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel looked around wildly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCall 911!\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A woman on the sidewalk hesitated before fumbling for her phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel pressed his face against the glass. The heat radiating from inside the SUV was unbearable even from outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The baby\u2019s eyes were beginning to droop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNo, no, no\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He grabbed the door handle again uselessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His breathing quickened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without another second of hesitation, Daniel ran toward a nearby construction barrier and seized a large chunk of broken concrete from the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Someone yelled, \u201cWait!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CRASH!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stone exploded through the passenger window. Glass rained across the seats and pavement. Gasps erupted from the crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel reached inside immediately, ignoring the shards slicing into his arm. He unlocked the door and pulled it open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wave of suffocating heat blasted outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The baby was barely moving now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHey, hey, I got you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daniel carefully unbuckled the child and lifted the sweating infant into his arms.
