<em>he<\/em> used to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hallway felt smaller now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confusion flickered across his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou told him to cut you out?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A small nod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man exhaled slowly, like the words cost something to bring up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf anyone ever found that picture\u2026 I couldn\u2019t be in it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer nearest them frowned. \u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man looked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for the first time, there was no hesitation\u2014just truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause your \u2018Daniel Reed\u2019 never existed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ripple of tension passed through the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Child Services worker straightened slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026Then who did?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man\u2019s gaze shifted back to the boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe was someone who made a lot of enemies,\u201d he said. \u201cThe kind that don\u2019t stop looking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy\u2019s fingers tightened around the blanket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe said we were hiding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A deeper one this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy searched his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFrom you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That one hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man didn\u2019t dodge it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the distant noise of the building seemed to fade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer stepped in again, more careful now. \u201cAlright\u2026 we\u2019re going to need your name, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man stood slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reaching into his coat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a second\u2014every officer tensed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he pulled out a badge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something heavier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He flipped it open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nearest officer\u2019s expression changed instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he straightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026Understood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The others followed his lead without question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSee?\u201d he said quietly. \u201cThat\u2019s the name he meant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man looked back down at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah,\u201d he admitted. \u201cIt is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy didn\u2019t he want me to know it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man crouched again, lowering himself to eye level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause once you know it\u2026\u201d he class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word was steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their hands met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow,\u201d the man said, \u201cyou don\u2019t have to hide anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officer shifted slightly. \u201cSir\u2026 is the child coming with you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man glanced over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as someone making a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf he wants to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hallway waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy looked down at the old flip phone in his hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then at class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A promise made <em>carefully<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy nodded once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decision made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man stood, helping him up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blanket slipped slightly off the boy\u2019s shoulders\u2014but he didn\u2019t grab it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He didn\u2019t need to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As they walked toward the elevator together, the officers stepped aside without a word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because whatever name had just been spoken\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t just a name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the boy had just stepped through
