No masks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guards exchanged uneasy glances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because this wasn\u2019t how power usually spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something steadier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man reached for the signet ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to put it on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But to hold it between his fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you know what I found?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He didn\u2019t expect them to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI found a kingdom that forgot who it was,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause it stopped listening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words settled deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lead knight lowered his head further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026Then come back,\u201d he said. \u201cLead us again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man studied him for a long moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then slowly\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room seemed to rise with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeading isn\u2019t about sitting on a throne,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s about standing where the truth is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toward the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guards shifted quickly, clearing a path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No command needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTake me to the palace,\u201d the knight said quickly, almost urgently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man paused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confusion rippled again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026My king?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked back over his shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the tavern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the place where no one bowed until they <em>knew<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe throne can wait,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A faint, knowing look crossed his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe kingdom can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The doors creaked open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cold air rushed in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But no one shivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because something had changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man stepped into the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guards followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The knights followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because they were ordered to\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But because they understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The true heir hadn\u2019t returned to be crowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had returned\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To remind them what the crown was supposed to mean.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The tavern stayed frozen.
