Same muddy sneakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same silent stare at the white unicorn in the front display window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For thirty-one nights, Mr. Levin watched him through the security cameras of the toy store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy never begged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never touched the glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never caused trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He only stood there with those exhausted little eyes fixed on the unicorn with the silver mane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And every night before leaving, he whispered something too quietly for the cameras to catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, Mr. Levin assumed it was simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another homeless child wanting a toy he could never afford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But on the thirty-second night, something felt different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy looked terrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rain poured heavily outside while thunder shook the streets, yet he remained standing beneath the flickering streetlamp across from the store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shivering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin sighed, grabbed his coat, and locked the register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKid,\u201d he called while stepping outside. \u201cThe store\u2019s closed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy flinched like someone had shouted at him before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His small hands tightened around the sleeves of his hoodie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up close, he looked younger than Mr. Levin expected. Maybe eight. Maybe nine. Dirt smudged his cheeks, and his lips were pale from the cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin glanced toward the unicorn in the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe says if she gets scared at the shelter, she imagines that unicorn waiting for her.\u201d His voice cracked. \u201cSo I come look at it first\u2026 then I tell her what it looked like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rain suddenly felt colder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin stared at him in silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy pointed weakly toward the silver stars painted around the unicorn display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYesterday I told her the stars looked magical.\u201d A tiny smile appeared. \u201cShe laughed for the first time in days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something inside Mr. Levin twisted painfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhere is your sister now?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt Saint Mary\u2019s shelter.\u201d The boy hesitated. \u201cShe\u2019s sick.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin looked back through the toy store window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unicorn suddenly didn\u2019t look like merchandise anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It looked important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you just ask for help?\u201d he asked quietly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy\u2019s answer came instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause people get angry when homeless people ask for things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words hit harder than thunder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin felt ashamed of how many times he had watched this child on the cameras and assumed the worst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without another word, he unlocked the store door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The little boy froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCome inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2014I can\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, you can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warmth of the shop wrapped around them as they stepped in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy walked slowly toward the unicorn like he was approaching something sacred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His trembling fingers hovered inches away but never touched it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin carefully lifted the toy from the display shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The child\u2019s eyes widened immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, sir,\u201d he whispered quickly. \u201cI wasn\u2019t trying to steal\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin knelt in front of him and placed the unicorn gently into his arms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a moment, the boy simply stared at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then his entire body began shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not from cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From trying not to cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin nodded slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boy hugged the unicorn tightly against his chest as tears finally rolled down his dirty cheeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then he whispered the sentence that shattered the old man completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin turned away for a second because suddenly he couldn\u2019t trust his own face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before the boy left, he stopped at the doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Levin looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The child smiled for the very first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he disappeared into the rain holding the unicorn like it was hope itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next evening, Mr. Levin closed the toy store early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
