Travelers whispered stories about voices moving between the trees at night. Entire hunting parties disappeared there without leaving bodies behind. Even wolves avoided the deeper regions where the fog never fully lifted from the ground.

The kingdom blamed superstition.

But soldiers still refused assignments near the forest borders whenever possible.

Especially after the fall of House Vaelor.

Rain had stopped only an hour earlier when the convoy entered the trees.

Cold mist drifted across the forest floor beneath pale moonlight while armored hunters guided exhausted horses carefully through the ancient woods. Chains rattled softly beside wagon wheels as prisoners stumbled through mud between armed soldiers.

At the center of the convoy walked a frightened orphan boy wrapped in a torn gray cloak.

No one paid much attention to him.

The hunters believed he was another servant child taken during the village sweeps near the southern valleys. Too small for labor. Too thin for military use. One commander even suggested abandoning him before nightfall to lighten the convoy.

But something about the boy unsettled the soldiers.

Animals reacted strangely whenever he passed nearby. Horses became nervous around him. Torches flickered unpredictably despite the still air. And several prisoners claimed the forest itself sounded different whenever the child looked toward the trees.

The boy never understood why.

He only knew fear followed him too often.

The cinematic memory drifted slowly through the convoy beneath the towering black forest canopy.

Wet branches scraping armor.
Fog curling between ancient roots.
Chains dragging softly through mud.

Somewhere far deeper in the woods, something growled.

The sound stopped every conversation instantly.

A young knight near the rear tightened his grip on his sword.

“Stay close to the torches,” he warned quietly.

No one argued.

The deeper they traveled, the quieter the forest became.

First the insects disappeared.

Then birdsong.

Then even the wind itself seemed to vanish between the massive trees.

The silence felt unnatural.

Like the forest was listening.

The orphan boy noticed it first.

He slowed his steps slightly while staring into the darkness between the trunks surrounding the convoy. His breathing became shallow beneath the cold fog.

Whispers brushed faintly through his mind.

Not words exactly.

Fragments.

Lost…
Home…
Return…

The child squeezed his eyes shut tightly.

He had heard strange voices before.

Usually before something terrible happened.

One prisoner walking beside him noticed the fear on his face.

“What is it?” the man whispered nervously.

The boy barely answered.

“Something’s watching us.”

Before anyone could respond, the horses erupted into panic.

Several animals reared violently, nearly throwing their riders into the mud. Soldiers shouted in confusion while torches flickered wildly against the darkness.

Then the forest went completely silent.

Not a single sound remained.

No chains.
No armor.
No breathing.

Nothing.

And from the fog ahead, something enormous emerged.

The creature stepped between the trees slowly enough for terror to spread before anyone fully saw it.

At first only glowing eyes appeared through the darkness.

Then claws.

Then the impossible shape of the beast itself towering above the convoy.

Its body resembled an enormous wolf distorted by something ancient and unnatural. Black fur covered massive scarred limbs thick enough to split tree trunks apart. Broken chains hung across its shoulders like remnants of old imprisonment. One side of its face carried deep burn scars stretching toward a glowing white eye filled with terrible intelligence.

Several soldiers screamed instantly.

“Monster!”

“Draw weapons!”

“Protect the convoy!”

Panic exploded through the forest.

Arrows launched wildly into the fog while terrified horses collapsed backward against the wagons. One soldier swung his sword at the creature’s leg only to be thrown several feet into the trees by a single movement of its massive body.

But the monster barely acknowledged the attacks.

It kept walking forward calmly.

Toward the orphan boy.

A commander stepped protectively in front of the child instinctively.

“Protect the prince!” he shouted before freezing in confusion.

The surrounding soldiers stared at him.

Prince?

The commander himself looked horrified after realizing what he had just said aloud.

The orphan boy stood trembling behind him.

He had no idea why those words made the soldiers suddenly afraid of him too.

The creature stopped only a few feet away now.

Its glowing eyes locked directly onto the child.

The emotional orchestra beneath the forest lowered into near silence while fog drifted slowly between them.

The boy couldn’t breathe properly anymore.

Tears filled his eyes.

Every instinct inside him screamed to run.

But something deeper held him still.

Recognition.

The creature lowered its enormous head carefully toward him.

Nearby knights tightened their weapons in desperation, waiting for the child to be ripped apart.

Instead…

The monster knelt.

A massive clawed hand pressed gently against the earth before the orphan like a knight swearing fealty before a throne.

The entire forest seemed to stop moving.

“My King…” the creature whispered.

Its voice echoed through the trees like distant thunder softened by grief.

“You have finally returned to us.”

Silence shattered the convoy more completely than violence ever could.

Soldiers slowly lowered their weapons in disbelief.

One man dropped his torch entirely.

The orphan stared at the creature with visible confusion and terror.

“I’m not a king,” he whispered shakily.

The monster’s glowing eyes softened.

“Yes,” it answered quietly. “That is the lie they taught you.”

Suddenly the earth beneath the child’s feet began glowing faintly.

Ancient golden symbols illuminated beneath the forest floor in enormous circular patterns hidden beneath centuries of roots and stone.

Several prisoners backed away in fear.

Then an elderly knight near the rear of the convoy went pale.

“No…” he whispered breathlessly.

The old soldier stumbled backward while staring at the glowing symbols surrounding the boy.

“The lost bloodline…”

Another soldier grabbed his arm urgently.

“What are you talking about?”

The elderly knight never looked away from the child.

“The royal seal of Velmora only awakens for descendants of House Aetherion.”

Fear spread visibly through the convoy.

Because everyone knew the history.

Fifteen years earlier, King Edric’s entire bloodline supposedly died during the Night of Crows—the massacre that destroyed Velmora’s royal family and collapsed the kingdom forever.

No heirs survived.

At least that was the story the surviving lords told the people afterward.

The orphan boy looked around helplessly while golden light reflected beneath the fog.

“I don’t understand…”

The creature slowly rose to its full terrifying height again.

Its massive eyes turned toward the soldiers surrounding the convoy.

“You hunted your own king through chains and mud,” it growled softly.

Several knights immediately stepped backward.

The commander’s face had gone completely white.

Because he finally remembered something buried deep beneath years of propaganda.

A rumor whispered secretly among older soldiers after the kingdom fell.

The infant prince never died.

He vanished.

The child looked up toward the creature again, tears trembling beneath his eyes.

“Who am I?” he whispered.

The monster stared at him for a long moment.

Not like a beast.

Like a guardian mourning something precious.

Then it lowered its head slightly.

“You are the son of Velmora’s last true king,” it said quietly.

“And the throne they murdered your family to steal still belongs to you.”

The orphan’s knees nearly gave out beneath him.

Fragments of memory suddenly tore violently through his mind.

A woman singing beside candlelight.
Golden banners moving above castle walls.
A giant shadow creature resting beside his cradle while armored guards bowed their heads.

And fire.

So much fire consuming palace halls.

The boy gasped sharply.

The monster stepped closer carefully.

“They lied to you about who you are.”

Moonlight filtered faintly through the black trees above them while the glowing symbols beneath the forest illuminated brighter around the orphan’s trembling feet.

And for the first time since the fall of Velmora…

Its lost king finally began to remember.

Nobody willingly entered the forests beyond Velmora after sunset.
