Noble girls carried silver-hilted blades. Their family crests shone on cloaks trimmed with fur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash had no crest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a small wooden token tied around his neck with fraying string.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The registrar looked down at him and frowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cName.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAsh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHouse?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash was quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nobles nearby began to laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric Varion pushed through the crowd, golden hair bright beneath the falling snow. Beside him stood Master Vael, the oldest swordmaster in Ashkar, his silver beard moving in the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash slowly bent down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moment his fingers touched the wooden sword, the plaza changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His shoulders settled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His feet shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His breathing became silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The awkward little beggar vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his place stood something ancient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master Vael went pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat stance\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Aldric leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric\u2019s smile faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d Cedric snapped. \u201cScared?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric attacked first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His polished practice sword cut through the snow toward Ash\u2019s chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash moved once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CLANG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric\u2019s blade flew from his hand and spun across the frozen stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one laughed now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric stared at his empty hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash lowered the wooden sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSwords do not care where someone is born.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words echoed louder than any war horn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Aldric stood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time in years, the nobles saw fear cross his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master Vael whispered, \u201cImpossible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric\u2019s face twisted red with shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe cheated!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash looked at him calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric grabbed another blade and lunged again, angrier this time, wilder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash stepped aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wooden sword touched Cedric\u2019s wrist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric collapsed into the snow, not hurt badly, but defeated so completely that even his own father, Lord Varion, looked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash dropped the sword immediately, as though afraid of what he had just done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That apology broke something in Master Vael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He descended from the balcony faster than a man his age should have been able to move. Guards parted for him. Nobles bowed. He ignored them all and stopped in front of Ash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho taught you that form?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vael\u2019s eyes narrowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo not lie to me, boy. That was the Royal Guard Form. It died with the old bloodline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A cold silence spread through the plaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Aldric\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash touched the wooden token at his neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy mother said not to show it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour mother?\u201d Vael asked softly. \u201cWhat was her name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash looked down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMira.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name struck the king harder than any blade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aldric gripped the balcony rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord Varion noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So did Master Vael.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But before anyone could speak, Cedric rose from the snow, shaking with humiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy father says beggars steal names too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash\u2019s small hands curled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric stepped closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe your mother lied before she died.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wooden token snapped in Ash\u2019s grip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, his calm broke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wind swept through the plaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not strong enough to harm anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But strong enough to lift the snow around him in a spinning ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master Vael backed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Aldric whispered, \u201cMira\u2019s child\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash looked terrified of himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He turned to run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two guards blocked him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeize the boy!\u201d Lord Varion shouted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Master Vael said sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the order had already moved through the plaza like poison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A guard reached for Ash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before his hand touched the child\u2019s shoulder, the wooden token fell open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside was not a charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was half of a royal seal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black iron.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shaped like a dragon\u2019s wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire plaza froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Aldric descended from the balcony without waiting for his escort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each step he took looked heavier than the last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When he reached Ash, he did not look like a king anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked like a man seeing a ghost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash clutched it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy mother gave it to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aldric\u2019s voice trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe told me the other half was buried with my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master Vael\u2019s eyes widened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour Majesty\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord Varion suddenly stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis proves nothing. His voice cracked. \u201cBecause she knew the court had been poisoned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord Varion\u2019s hand moved toward his sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master Vael saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo it was true,\u201d Vael said. \u201cThe night Prince Kael vanished\u2026 House Varion was involved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plaza erupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cedric looked at his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFather?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord Varion\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He drew his sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Steel flashed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not toward the king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toward Ash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Master Vael moved, but age slowed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Aldric reached, but distance betrayed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash stood frozen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then Cedric stepped in front of the blade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFather, no!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord Varion stopped barely in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy stared at his father, horror replacing pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s seven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lord Varion\u2019s mouth curled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe is a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was when the second war horn sounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not from the plaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From beyond the city walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ancient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The black dragon banners whipped violently as soldiers turned toward the northern gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rider burst into the plaza, horse foaming, armor covered in frost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour Majesty! The Frostborn army has crossed the valley!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Panic spread through the nobles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Aldric rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow many?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rider swallowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll of them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Royal Sword Trials ended in that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boys and girls who had come to win glory suddenly clung to their parents. Lords shouted orders.
