Cheers for weddings. Cheers for soldiers returning from war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the sound inside the Pit was something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thousands of voices crashed together beneath the burning afternoon sky as iron chains rattled above the arena floor. Nobles laughed from marble balconies draped in crimson silk while merchants tossed coins onto the sand below, placing wagers on how long the little girl would survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree minutes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLess than one!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe beast will tear her apart before the second gate even closes!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crowd roared with savage delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the rusted cage at the center of the arena, six-year-old Elara curled herself into the corner, sobbing so hard her tiny shoulders shook. Dirt streaked her face beneath tangled golden hair, and her small fingers clutched the iron bars until her knuckles turned white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeo\u2026\u201d she whispered brokenly. \u201cLeo, where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But her brother was nowhere near the cage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Far above the arena floor, King Garrick lounged upon his jagged black throne carved from volcanic stone. A crown of crooked iron spikes rested upon his silver hair like claws gripping his skull. His eyes gleamed with amusement as servants poured wine into a golden cup balanced lazily in his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tyrant loved executions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRelease the hound,\u201d he commanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The command echoed across the Pit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then came the sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CLANG.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposite gate slowly creaked open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence spread for a single terrible second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the beast emerged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gasps rippled through the arena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wolf-hound was enormous \u2014 larger than any natural creature should have been. Old scars crisscrossed its gray-black fur while heavy iron plates had been bolted cruelly into its shoulders by arena handlers. Bruises covered his arms beneath torn sleeves. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wolf-hound leaped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Leo moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He slammed the spear against a half-buried rock, angling the broken shaft upward at the last possible second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CRACK!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beast collided midair with explosive force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wood shattered instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the impact twisted the monster sideways before it crashed violently into the sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arena gasped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children usually ran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children screamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children begged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leo\u2019s knees shook violently beneath him, but he never stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCome on,\u201d he whispered hoarsely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beast growled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">High above the arena, King Garrick slowly leaned forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His grin had vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p snout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THUD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wolf-hound staggered backward snarling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leo stumbled too, breathing hard now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His vision blurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He knew he was going to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
