The ancient castle of Ashkar trembled on its mountain spine, its walls cracked from catapult fire, its banners soaked and torn, its soldiers exhausted after three days without sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Vaelor stood on the battlements, his golden armor dulled by rain and smoke. He had not slept either, but pride kept his spine straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBring that child down,\u201d he ordered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy stood at the tower\u2019s edge as if the wind could not touch him. His torn cloth snapped wildly behind his thin shoulders. His long dark hair clung to his dirt-streaked face. Mud covered his bare feet. He looked too small to belong in a war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But every soldier on the battlements knew the rumors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The forest boy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The child found wandering alone after wolves surrounded a hunting party but refused to attack him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy who spoke to wounded birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy dead ravens supposedly followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Vaelor hated rumors. They poured into the storm in endless waves, circling above Ashkar like a living crown of darkness. Soldiers gasped. Priests stopped praying. Enemy soldiers stumbled through mud, shielding their faces as the swarm drove them away from the gates. Siege towers lurched, crashed into one another, and collapsed in flames. Archers dropped their bows. Drummers ran. Commanders screamed orders no one could hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the battlements, Ashkar\u2019s soldiers watched in stunned silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Vaelor stepped back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old prophecy carved beneath the Temple of Ashkar returned to him like a blade sliding between ribs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the storm obeys the child\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">the kingdom no longer belongs to kings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,\u201d Vaelor whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the boy heard him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the tower, through thunder and rain, the child slowly turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His eyes were not glowing. That would have been easier to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somehow that frightened Vaelor more than any magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy\u2019s name was Ash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least, that was what the servants called him. No one knew where he had truly come from. Months earlier, hunters had found him sleeping beneath a cedar tree while wolves lay around him in a protective circle. He had been half-starved, feverish, and clutching a broken raven feather in one fist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaelor had ordered him brought to the castle, not out of mercy, but curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children with strange powers could become useful weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or dangerous mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash had been sent to the kitchens, where he carried firewood, scrubbed pots, and slept beside the ovens. He spoke rarely. When cooks shouted, he lowered his head. When soldiers mocked him, he endured it. But whenever an animal limped into the courtyard, Ash found it. A dog with a broken paw. A horse terrified by battle horns. A raven tangled in wire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He always whispered the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can rest now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one knew what it meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only one person had ever been kind to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira, the castle laundress, had found him one winter night behind the kitchens, curled beside a dying raven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ll freeze out here,\u201d she had said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash looked up with huge dark eyes. \u201cIt\u2019s scared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a bird.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt still gets scared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira had wrapped both child and raven in her shawl. \u201cThen bring it inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From then on, Ash followed her whenever he could. She gave him bread crusts, taught him letters using soap marks on stone, and once, when no one was looking, cut his tangled hair with sewing scissors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are not a bad omen,\u201d she told him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash had stared at the floor. \u201cEveryone says I am.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEveryone says many stupid things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That had made him smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Mira stood in the courtyard below the tower, rain soaking her gray dress as she stared upward in horror and wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAsh,\u201d she breathed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ravens continued to drive the army back. The enemy formation broke. Men fled into the valley, abandoning ladders and burning engines. Within an hour, the siege had become a retreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashkar was saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers began to cheer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Ash did not smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the storm had not come for the enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had come for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At sunset, the last enemy banners disappeared beyond the hills. The ravens returned to the castle walls and rooftops, silent now, watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">King Vaelor summoned Ash to the throne hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy arrived barefoot, shivering, wrapped in Mira\u2019s old shawl. Rainwater dripped from his hair onto the black marble floor. Nobles gathered along the walls, whispering behind jeweled hands. Generals watched with open fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaelor sat upon the Ironwood Throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you know what you did today?\u201d the king asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash looked down. \u201cI asked them to stop the fire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe birds?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaelor leaned forward. \u201cCan you command them again?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash hesitated. \u201cThey are not soldiers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few nobles laughed nervously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaelor\u2019s eyes hardened. \u201cEverything in this kingdom serves the crown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash finally looked up. \u201cNot everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hall went silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira, standing near the servants\u2019 arch, closed her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Child, no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaelor rose slowly. \u201cYou saved Ashkar. For that, you should be rewarded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut power without obedience is treason.\u201d The king descended the steps. \u201cYou will remain in the tower chamber until I decide how best to use your gift.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira stepped forward. \u201cYour Majesty, he is only a child.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaelor did not even look at her. \u201cAnd children become men. Men become threats.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash\u2019s hands curled around the shawl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ravens outside began to caw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Softly at first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then louder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaelor noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So did everyone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash whispered, \u201cPlease don\u2019t lock me up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one brief moment, something flickered across Vaelor\u2019s face. Not mercy. Memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then it vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTake him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two guards approached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ravens slammed against the stained-glass windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CRACK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guards froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash squeezed his eyes shut. \u201cDon\u2019t hurt them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ravens stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every person in the hall understood then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The birds were not obeying the king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were obeying the boy\u2019s heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vaelor understood too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that was why he became afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That night, Ash was locked in the tower chamber beneath the very roof where he had summoned the storm. A raven perched outside in the rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t want to scare them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira knelt beside him. \u201cYou saved us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI scared you too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA little,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash looked at her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira smiled sadly. \u201cBut being scared doesn\u2019t mean I stopped loving you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His mouth trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked away quickly, as if tears were shameful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira placed the soup beside him. \u201cAsh, listen to me. The king will try to turn you into a weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou must not let him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash touched the raven feather tied around his wrist with thread. \u201cThe ravens said something today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira went still. \u201cThey speak to you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot like people. More like\u2026 remembering.\u201d He frowned. \u201cThey called me little storm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mira\u2019s breath caught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d Ash asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She stood too quickly. \u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Ash had seen fear before. Queen Elowen. People loved her. They said ravens nested in her garden and storms came gently when she sang.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ash listened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe had a baby during the Black Winter. A prince. The priests said the child was born during thunder. But the king\u2019s brother wanted the throne.
