The sharp, sterile smell of antiseptic filled my nose, and when I tried to swallow, pain tore through my throat like glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My hands flew to my stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A nurse leaned over me quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe baby is okay,\u201d she whispered. \u201cThere\u2019s still a heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was when I cried.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because I had survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because my child had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
