Rain struck the stained-glass windows of Saint Orlan\u2019s Cathedral like thrown gravel, and beyond the cliffs, the Atlantic roared against the black rocks beneath the castle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entire royal court had gathered to watch an execution disguised as judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the center of the marble hall stood a child in torn linen, barefoot, soaked from the storm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his small hands was a rusted blade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nobles laughed first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the king saw it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And stopped smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
