Three.
The chandeliers flicker once.
Then every light in the ballroom dies.
Gasps erupt in the darkness. Glass shatters somewhere near the bar. A woman screams. The only sound left is the slow ticking of the grandfather clock at the center of the hall.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Then—emergency lights flash on in deep crimson.
Elena’s elegant smile is gone. Her face has drained of color. Her trembling hands grip the wheelchair armrests so tightly her knuckles turn white.
The little girl still holds her wrist.
“You remember now,” the child whispers.

Across the room, Elena’s husband suddenly lunges toward them. “Get her away from Elena!” he shouts.
But before anyone moves, the ballroom doors slam shut by themselves.
The guests panic.
One of the businessmen reaches for his phone—no signal.
Another backs away slowly, staring at the girl like he’s seen a ghost.
Because he has.
The child tilts her head slightly.
“Seven years ago,” she says softly, “you locked the doors exactly like this.”
Elena stops breathing.
Fragments of memory crash into her mind—smoke filling a smaller room… alarms ignored… terrified pounding on locked exits… and one tiny girl crying for her mother.
“No…” Elena whispers.
The girl finally smiles.
But it isn’t a child’s smile.
“You told everyone the fire was an accident.”
The grandfather clock suddenly stops ticking.
Silence.
Then a hidden projector flickers alive above the ballroom.
Security footage.
The room watches in horror as Elena appears on screen—standing, not paralyzed—arguing with men beside a locked emergency exit while flames spread behind them.
The guests recoil from her wheelchair.
Her husband stares at her in disbelief. “You said you couldn’t walk…”
Elena’s lips tremble.
The little girl leans close to her ear.
“They buried my mother downstairs,” she whispers. “But they never buried me.”
And then—
the child slowly points toward the dark hallway behind the ballroom.
Small wet footprints begin appearing on the marble floor… one after another… moving toward them from the darkness.
