Part 2: The Mechanic Prodigy

The smile didn’t last.

It didn’t need to.

Because the engine—

Changed.

The roar smoothed out into something deeper. Controlled. Intentional.

Like it had decided to stay.

The man swallowed hard.
“That’s… not normal.”

“No,” the boy said quietly.

His hand rested lightly on the hood.

The metal vibrated beneath his palm—

Not violently.

Steadily.

Like a heartbeat.

The man took another step back.

“I’ve heard engines run clean before,” he said. “That’s not what this is.”

The boy nodded.

“It’s not running,” he said.

A pause.

“It’s listening.”

Silence pressed in.

Then—

The engine revved.

On its own.

The man flinched.

“You’re not touching it!”

“I don’t have to,” the boy replied.

The strange dial clicked again—

By itself.

Click.

The lights in the garage flickered.

The man’s voice dropped.

“…what did you wake up?”

The boy didn’t answer.

Because he was staring at the dashboard.

Dark—

Until it wasn’t.

A faint glow appeared.

Not from the usual indicators.

From behind them.

Symbols.

Faint.

Moving.

The boy’s expression shifted—

Not surprised.

Recognizing.

“…you remember too,” he murmured.

The man’s chest tightened.
“Remember what?!”

The boy stepped back slowly.

“Before this,” he said.

The engine pulsed again.

Deeper.

Stronger.

The sound didn’t come from the cylinders anymore.

It came from inside the car.

From somewhere that shouldn’t exist.

Metal creaked.

The frame adjusted—

Just slightly.

Like something stretching after a long sleep.

“No…” the man whispered.

The boy finally turned to him.

“You said it would never run again,” he said.

The man nodded weakly.

“I was wrong.”

The boy shook his head.

“No,” he said.

“You were right.”

A beat.

The engine gave one final, heavy pulse.

And then—

It stopped.

Dead silence.

The man blinked.

“What…?”

The boy looked back at the car.

“That car,” he said softly—

“will never run again.”

The man stared at him, confused.

Terrified.

“Then what just—”

The headlights snapped on.

Blinding.

Not yellow.

Not white.

Something else.

Something aware.

The boy didn’t look away.

“Because now,” he said quietly—

“It doesn’t need to.”

The car moved.

Just an inch.

No ignition.

No command.

The man stumbled backward.

“That’s not a car…”

The boy’s faint smile returned.

“Not anymore.”

The garage door creaked open—

On its own.

Outside—

Night waited.

And for the first time—

The engine didn’t roar.

It breathed.
