Part 2: The Name He Used

The question didn’t echo.

It landed.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

The man didn’t answer right away.

His eyes dropped to the torn photograph still hanging from his hand—the jagged edge where a face used to be.

Where he used to be.

The hallway felt smaller now.

Quieter.

Even the officers held back.

Because whatever this was… it wasn’t routine anymore.

The man finally spoke.

“Because I told him to.”

The boy blinked.

Confusion flickered across his face.

“You told him to cut you out?”

A small nod.

The man exhaled slowly, like the words cost something to bring up.

“If anyone ever found that picture… I couldn’t be in it.”

The officer nearest them frowned. “Why not?”

The man looked up.

And for the first time, there was no hesitation—just truth.

“Because your ‘Daniel Reed’ never existed.”

A ripple of tension passed through the hallway.

The Child Services worker straightened slightly.

“…Then who did?”

The man’s gaze shifted back to the boy.

Softened.

“He was someone who made a lot of enemies,” he said. “The kind that don’t stop looking.”

The boy’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“He said we were hiding.”

“You were.”

A pause.

A deeper one this time.

The boy searched his face.

“From you?”

That one hit.

The man didn’t dodge it.

“Yes.”

Silence.

Even the distant noise of the building seemed to fade.

The officer stepped in again, more careful now. “Alright… we’re going to need your name, sir.”

The man stood slowly.

Reaching into his coat.

For a second—every officer tensed.

Then he pulled out a badge.

Not police.

Something else.

Something heavier.

He flipped it open.

The nearest officer’s expression changed instantly.

Then he straightened.

“…Understood.”

The others followed his lead without question.

The boy noticed.

“See?” he said quietly. “That’s the name he meant.”

The man looked back down at him.

“Yeah,” he admitted. “It is.”

The boy hesitated.

Then—

“Why didn’t he want me to know it?”

The man crouched again, lowering himself to eye level.

“Because once you know it…” he said, voice quieter now, “you become part of everything attached to it.”

The boy didn’t look scared.

Just… thoughtful.

“He said you’d come if I used it.”

A faint, almost broken smile crossed the man’s face.

“I always do.”

The stretcher wheels squeaked faintly as they disappeared down the hall.

Final.

The boy’s voice dropped.

“…Is he really gone?”

The man didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes flicked once toward apartment 4B.

Then back.

“…Yeah.”

The word was steady.

But not easy.

The boy swallowed.

Then asked the question that mattered more than all the others.

“…So what happens to me now?”

The man didn’t hesitate this time.

He reached out—slowly, giving the boy time to pull back if he wanted.

The boy didn’t.

Their hands met.

Firm.

Certain.

“Now,” the man said, “you don’t have to hide anymore.”

The officer shifted slightly. “Sir… is the child coming with you?”

The man glanced over.

Then back at the boy.

Not as an agent.

Not as someone with authority.

But as someone making a choice.

“If he wants to.”

The hallway waited.

The boy looked down at the old flip phone in his hands.

Then at the torn photo.

Then back at the man.

“You’re not gonna disappear too, right?”

A beat.

“No.”

Not a promise made lightly.

A promise made carefully.

The boy nodded once.

Decision made.

“Okay.”

The man stood, helping him up.

The blanket slipped slightly off the boy’s shoulders—but he didn’t grab it again.

He didn’t need to.

As they walked toward the elevator together, the officers stepped aside without a word.

Because whatever name had just been spoken…

It wasn’t just a name.

It was a door.

And the boy had just stepped through it.
